In AWS you have the ability to take a complete snapshot of you EBS volumes. How is this useful? In my previous post I mentioned snapshots are locked to their AZ, well if you create a snapshot of a volume you can restore it in a different AZ or even region! You have a few options for these snapshot you can use the EBS snapshot archive, recycle bin for EBS snapshot, or Fast Snapshot Restore (FSR). The EBS snapshot archive is by far the cheapest by over 75% however it takes 24-72 hours to restore the snapshot and it moves the snapshot to an “archive tier”. Next up is the recycle bin for EBS snapshot this protects EBS volumes from accidental deletion so they can be recovered if needed, retention policy is from one day to one year. Finally there’s FSR, this is the most expensive option but it offers the quickest restore of any other option and is especially useful if you have large volumes you need to restore or you need to get them up ASAP.
