FSx is very similar to RDS the major difference being that it allows you to deploy and manage 3rd party file systems. These include NetApp On Tap, Windows File System, Lustre file system, and OpenZFS. Windows allows you to integrate AD into your file system and has daily backups to S3. It utilizes SMB and NTFS, you can even connect linux instances. Lustre is synced with S3 and you can browse through S3 like a directory by utilizing it, Lustre is also a good option if you are utilizing High Performance Computing thanks to its low latency and performance. You have two options when utilizing Lustre, scratch or persistent partition. Scratch offers higher performance with no replication and persistent offers weaker performance but greater replication and redundancy by replicating files across AZ. NetApp on Tap is a great option if you wish to migrate your existing NAS or NetApp On Tap storage to AWS. NetApp storage on AWS will also shrink and grow automatically based on your usage and supports instantaneous cloning, snapshots, replication, and deduplication. Finally we have OpenZFS, this file system utilizes NFS so it’s a great option if your file system is utilizing NFS already and you wish to migrate. Similarly to NetApp it supports snapshots and cloning. Both NetApp and ZFS support compression as well. As always if you have any questions feel free to leave a comment!
